About Us

Bridger Charter Academy

A School Within a School

First established as Bozeman's alternative school in 1993, Bridger Charter has gone through many changes in its more than 20 years of existence. In 2016, after the program adopted its competency-based approach to education, Bridger applied for and was granted status as the first public charter school-within-a-school in Montana. Since then, the Bridger faculty team has worked tirelessly to continuously improve work toward our goals of individualized, rigorous, and meaningful education for each student at BCA.

At present, Bridger serves approximately 115 students from 9th-12th grade and offers courses in base curriculum including English, math, science, and social studies, as well as two electives -- art and health enhancement. Bridger students take at least two courses with us in Bridger Charter Academy and attend Bozeman High School for their other core and elective courses. Bridger Charter is located on the same campus as Bozeman High School. After completing course requirements, students are awarded a Bozeman High School diploma.

Bridger Charter is open to students who are zoned for either Bozeman High School or Gallatin High School.

Who Should Attend the Bridger Charter Academy?

BCA is a strong fit for students seeking

  • personalized instruction (via goals, pacing, and context);
  • flexible scheduling (based on personal, vocational, curricular and extracurricular needs);
  • access to technology-based curriculum to fit their schedule and pace;
  • a learning environment in which they can work independently with teacher support as needed;
  • learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom;
  • small classroom settings;
  • and small learning community within the larger high school, focused on academic, personal, and social growth.

What Is Competency Based Education?

Competency based education “creates flexibility by allowing students to progress as they demonstrate proficiency with academic content and skills, regardless of time, place, or pace of learning. Competency-based strategies provide flexibility in the way that credit can be earned or awarded, and provide students with personalized learning opportunities” (U.S. Department of Education, 2016).

Specifically, the Bridger Charter Academy classes include

  • units of credit defined by rigorous competencies, aligned with local, state, and national standards;
  • advancement upon mastery of rigorous competencies; and
  • personalized learning plans focused on individual learner growth.
